Donnette Alfelt on Eternal Marriage
Wednesday, March 30, 2011
In this episode, Pearse interviews Donnette Alfelt about the loss of a spouse and her belief in eternal marriage. Donnette's husband Lennart passed away 30 years ago, but she considers herself still married. She discusses the New Church teachings that inform the way she thinks of death and her continued connection with Lennart. Donnette has published several books on grief, marriage, and life, including Comfort and Hope for Widows and Widowers and leads support groups for widows and widowers. How might a belief in eternity change the way we approach our relationships?

I'm so proud of my mom! She took the painful experience of losing Dad so early and grew into somebody who brings such comfort and companionship to other widows and widowers. She is an inspiration.
What a great podcast and what a great topic! Donnette has given us years and years of her beautiful perspective on this difficult topic. Mt grandmother was a widow from 1960 to 1986 and I thought that this was basically "forever" and so unfair. But she said that she thought about grandpa "every day" which amazed me, but she was troubled about many of the same issues Donnette mentions. Donnette's work means that others like my grandmother have more support than she ever did. What a gem! I think that her efforts will mean that we will always have a group like this.
